With the Kingies facing Oxf*rd just a month before Varsity, the team was prepared for a tense and important game. Cambridge came out on top earlier in the season beating Oxf*rd 10-9 in November in a very closely fought match so we were aware that it would be a tough, evenly matched game.
Cambridge started strong, matching Oxf*rd’s early goal and holding off their attacking unit well. Neat pair attacking work from Abigail Thellusson and Miranda Smith pushed the Kingies ahead, alongside Livia Russell’s strong drives and precise shooting. Strong transition and dynamic attack from the Kingies forced Oxf*rd to call a timeout just before halftime after several goals in quick succession with a few minutes to spare.
Leading 5-3 at halftime, Cambridge were performing well but the second half proved to be a greater challenge. Oxf*rd came out very strong and equalised the score quickly. A significant push from Cambridge forced 3 more goals through a tight dark blue defense, including successful penalties from Abigail Thellusson and captain Lizzie Withers, but sadly it was not meant to be for the light blues this week. With a few lucky fast breaks and quick transition Oxford drew into the lead in the last few minutes, winning the game 10-8. However, the Kingies played very well as a unit and were able to demonstrate significant tactical and athletic improvement from the start of the season. Leaving the game with even greater resolve to keep improving and win Varsity on the 24th February, we may have lost this battle but we’re determined to win the war.
Goals were scored by Miranda Smith, Livia Russell, Abigail Thellusson and Lizzie Withers.
